FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is a highly focused state of attention brought about purely by the applied art and science of suggestion. What a volunteer experiences on stage is very similar to what one experiences in a movie theatre. If a person attending a movie suspends his disbelief, s/he will best be able to experience all the range of emotions that the movie may elicit. If, however, the movie goer sits with a critical mind set, analyzing the movie and its special effects, the individual will not experience the movie as vividly as one who absorbs what takes place on the silver screen. It is purely a reaction to suggestion... nothing more, nothing less.

IS HYPNOSIS MYSTICAL OR SUPERNATURAL?

The art and science of hypnotism is not mystical or magical in any way, whatsoever. On the contrary, it is very scientific. It is purely a natural manifestation of the human mind brought about by applied suggestion.

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS AN HYPNOTIC EYE?

There is no such thing as an hypnotic eye. The concept of a man who has eyes that transmit strange ephemeral powers is a nonsensical fallacy; one of the lingering myths surrounding hypnosis. In hypnosis the mind, perhaps for the first time, is completely and totally relaxed, thus freeing its creative potential. Thus, a comatose like trance, not only is not needed, but does not exist in the realm of hypnosis as is commonly believed.

DO WEAK WILLED PERSONS MAKE THE BEST SUBJECTS?

Actually, the opposite is true: those who make the best subjects are those who possess a strong will, and have an above average intelligence. Hypnosis has nothing to do with the will of a person, but rather, has more to do with the creative imagination of a person. Imagination is a much stonger faculty than the will. In the early days of hypnosis, it was believed that domination of one's will was the operative force behind hypnosis. Today we know this to be false. Bright, imaginative, intelligent, creative individuals, by far, make the best subjects.

CAN ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION EXPERIENCE HYPNOSIS?

Approximately 90 to 95 percent of the population can experience that state of total rest and relaxation, what some like to call hypnosis. Some will respond more rapidly, and more creatively, than others. Generally speaking, in an average group of people who are experiencing hypnosis for the first time, about one person in five will relax sufficiently deep enough (on their first attempt) to be able to be used on stage.

CAN A PERSON EXPERIENCE HYPNOSIS AGAINST HIS OR HER OWN WILL?

This is totally and completely impossible! Consent of the individual is required in order to achieve that state of total rest and relaxation. This consent, however, does not have to be verbal in nature. Many avowed skeptics, who publicy claim that they cannot experience that relaxed state, secretly harbour the desire to experience the state. Frequently, these individuals make the best subjects.

DO THE VOLUNTEERS ON THE STAGE BECOME PUPPETS?

Absolutely, positively, NO! Domination and submission in this state of total rest and relaxation is impossible. An individual is not only fully aware of all that's taking place while they are on the stage, but, they also have total and complete control. If there is any suggestion given that an individual does not want to respond to, they will not do it. They cannot be forced to do anything they do not want to do, regardless of the suggestion. What's unique about Theatre of the MIND is that LAMAR produces some astounding results in people who, under normal circumstances, would take weeks, months or even years for an individual to accomplish in a normal day-to-day situation. As an example, people that would not normally think of speaking in public in front of an audience of one thousand become quite competent elocutionists within a matter of minutes under the skillful direction of Robert LAMAR.

IS ROBERT LAMAR THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN INDUCE THE HYPNOTIC STATE?

In reality, any intelligent individual can learn to induce the state of total rest and relaxation, however, they should be willing to devote the necessary time and study required to learn all that there is to know about this art. Robert LAMAR has devoted the past 25 years of his life doing just that.

SHOULD I VOLUNTEER?

Most spectators attending one of Robert LAMAR's concerts wrestle with this question: "Should I participate?" "Why don't you go up!" "If you go up, I'll go up!" These comments can be heard at every LAMAR concert. After the concert, however, many of these same individuals are sorry that they didn't go up on the stage. After having seen the performance, they realize - too late - that they would like to experience that state of total rest and relaxation that the volunteers on the stage seem to enjoy so much. But, the fear of the unknown, coupled with the discomfort most feel about leaving their seats to head for the glaring spotlight of the stage, makes for a natural hesitation that is fully understandable.

To help you with your decision, and perhaps ease you out of your seat and up onto the stage, consider the following:

1. If you change your mind 30 minutes later, it will be too late.

2. Many of your fellow audience members will be proceeding up to the stage. There is definitely comfort in numbers.

3. Generally speaking, one in five who do go up on stage have the capacity to experience that state of total rest and relaxation. Wouldn't you like to see if you have that capacity first time around?

4. Robert LAMAR's Theatre of the MIND is a family show. Nothing will be done to humiliate or embarass you in any way.

5. Robert LAMAR's Theatre of the MIND is an extremely entertaining, and sometimes excrutiatingly funny show. However, keep this in mind: the audience does not laugh at you, but rather, they laugh with you. This is a very important distinction. If you laugh at someone, it may be funny for the moment, but soon afterwards you begin to feel uncomfortable. At Robert LAMAR's Theatre of the MIND the audience laughs with the volunteers as they live vicariously with them, wondering what they would have done if they had gone up on the stage.

So, what have you got to lose? Stand up, walk out into the aisle, make your way towards the stage, proceed up the staircase, and who knows...you just may be the next star of Robert LAMAR's Theatre of the MIND. It will be a relaxing, creative experience you will never forget.
