Get ready for this deceptively easy test. First, read the sentence below:
FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC
STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS.
Finished? Good! Now, go back and count the number of "F's" in the sentence.
Go ahead! I'll wait!
Finished? How many did you count? 3? Try again! I'll wait!
How many this time? Did you still find 3, or did you find an extra one, this time?
Well, what would you say if I told you that there were 6 "F's" in the above
sentence? Go ahead and check it out...I'll wait!
Still can't find them all? Try using your finger and placing it on each word
as you read through the sentence. Try it!
Better luck this time? If not, please do not feel stupid for not
being able to locate all 6 of them. You are not alone. In fact, the vast
majority of people will find only 3 the first time they try it. It is
rare when someone finds 4 the first time they read the above sentence.
But finding 5 or all 6 is extremely rare (assuming, of course, that the
person is honest and has not seen this test before). So, why, you may ask,
didn't you find all 6 "F's" the first time - or first several times - after
reading the sentence?
The answer reveals the unique nature of our mind and how it sometimes can be
fooled. If, after reading this far, you still have not found all 6 "F's"
then relax...I'm about to point them out to you. Like most, after your intial
reading of the above sentence you were able to spot quite easily the "F's"
contained in the words FINISHED, FILES and SCIENTIFIC.
You may have even, after numerous attempts, found an "F" in the word OF.
But if you look carefully, you will notice that the word OF is repeated
3 times in the sentence. So how come you did not see them when you were looking
for the "F's" as you were requested to do? It has nothing to do with your
intelligence, so relax! The answer reveals a normal function of the human brain.
The secret, as funny as it may seem, rests in the fact that the brain has
difficulty processing the OF. Why? Well, say that word out loud.
When we pronounce that simple two-letter word, we pronounce it as ov,
not as awf as in the word off. That V sound fools our
mind as we are looking for the "F's" initially. When we come across the word
of our mind dismisses it, because it does not have that "F" sound.
Stange, huh?
